The Road Less Traveled

Jokes from Jerry Seinfeld aside, “the road less traveled” can be a very good thing. And I’ve seen enough horror movies with my wife to know that the road less traveled can be a nightmare, too.

Growth Nation works with enough entrepreneurs to know that there are many people out here who are doing the thing they love. When that thing matches the market need and they’re able to get in front of those people that have value for what they have, it’s magic.

This past week we participated in DEMO Fall 2012 in Santa Clara, CA and Inc. 500/5000 in Phoenix – which by the way we’re following up with a second Phoenix-area event October 18. See more on that here. There are amazing entrepreneurs and business owners all around us! Wow! What inspiration! And a general theme seems to be that they believe in something and run with it in a unique way despite what people say. There’s often some ignoring of the pundits. But just as often or more, ignoring the pundits can lead to disaster.

I’ve heard it said that you should do what you think about every day, and that’s good advice. If it floats your boat, do it. Just make sure there’s enough market for it, that you position yourself for it, and you get enough people to know about it. Successful global companies and those recognized by Inc. 500 demonstrate this over and over.

These ideas are really the key aspects of marketing and growth – 1) position yourself and your company properly, 2) get the people who will care to know about you (lead generation) and 3) convert those leads to customers.

It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? It’s made either easier or more difficult when the love you have for your product and business obscures a realistic view of the market. If what you have is amazing and you’ve got plenty of time to develop it, no worries. Witness Facebook. If you have that love and a realistic view of the market – you’ll always be dangerous (in a good way).

If you have less time and don’t have unlimited resources, you’ve got to work fast and smart.

The road less traveled is a great place to be when you have passion, a great offering and a clear view ahead. What’s the magic for each business? Perhaps frustrating to some, it’s case-by-case.
